Aston Villa are preparing for the possibility of losing Ezri Konsa by stepping up their interest in Al-Ahli centre-back Roger Ibañez. Arsenal have already seen one offer rejected and are expected to return with an improved proposal, while Villa continue trying to secure the England defender on a new contract.

Unai Emery needs to protect the spine of his team after a summer shaped by important departures and constant interest in his senior players.

Villa have also moved to strengthen at left-back, but losing Konsa would create a much bigger problem because of his consistency, versatility and leadership.

Aston Villa in contact with potential Konsa replacement

According to Sky Sport Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Villa have been in repeated contact over a possible move for Ibañez.

The Brazilian has reportedly paused talks over extending his Al-Ahli contract after attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, although Villa have not yet submitted a formal offer.

The timing is important. The Guardian reports that Arsenal are preparing a second bid after their first attempt was rejected, with Villa valuing Konsa at a minimum of £60 million.

Villa’s window has been proactive but unsettled: they are working to reinforce the defence while also trying to prevent another major departure.

Arsenal pressure could force Villa into transfer race

Ibañez would give Emery an aggressive and experienced defender who is comfortable stepping forward and defending large spaces.

Those qualities would help replace part of what Konsa provides, although the Brazilian would still need time to adjust to the speed of the Premier League and Villa’s build-up demands.

Interest from other English clubs could complicate the deal. Al-Ahli can demand strong terms, while Ibañez’s decision to delay renewal talks may encourage more bidders to enter.

Villa therefore risk losing Konsa and then being forced into an auction for his replacement. Villa should continue negotiating with Konsa while establishing the full cost of signing Ibañez.

Selling for close to £60 million could fund a high-quality replacement and leave money for other areas, but allowing Arsenal to sign a proven defender without first securing his successor would be poor planning.

Villa need to be ready to act quickly rather than reacting after the sale.
