The international break meant several call-ups for Aston Villa Women players. And it's safe to say that Anna Patten will have enjoyed herself the most on the senior team side of things. For many of the other Villans, they will hope to see something of a turnaround this upcoming week.
Oftentimes, it can be difficult to come together and gel with a group in a condensed training span. The best national team sides, however, find ways to do so and control matches while their opposition attempts to try to figure it out.
Despite some of the frustrations that Villa players encountered on Friday, they will look forward to approaching the next fixture with a sense of optimism to push for a result.
On a positive note, Noelle Maritz made her 125th cap for Switzerland. While the national team under Pia Sundhage is transitioning overall to a younger side, the Villa full back continues to earn her way into the squad. Unfortunately for the Swiss, they lost at home to France. Tuesday, they will travel to Iceland and look to grab their first Nations League win.
England had a dominant 5-0 victory over Belgium. Using the full force of her bench, it seemed that everyone was getting in on the goal scoring. This did, however, leave Lucy Parker out. Depending on how the return leg in Belgium on Tuesday goes, she could be called into action for the Lionesses.
Kirsty Hanson came on at halftime for Scotland. Their 4-0 defeat came against a very strong German side. The forward had a couple of chances to break the deadlock and combined with teammates in the buildup. Germany showed why they are one of the better sides in Europe, though. Hanson had a moment of scare after saving a ball from going out and trying to make something happen. She collided and stayed down for a bit. She was able to get up, and after running it off, she finished the match. Hanson will look to change her country's fortunes in Wolfsburg on Tuesday.
Chasity Grant came on as a substitute for the Netherlands in their 3-1 win over Austria. The Dutch will travel for the return fixture next week. In a difficult Group A1, they are currently tied with the aforementioned Germans at seven points apiece.
Canada cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win against Argentina. They will look to repeat this performance when the two nations run it back in Langford on the 8th of April. Kailen Sheridan received the start in goal. This meant Sabrina D'Angelo observed the match for the full 90, but she is very much capable in her own right if Casey Stoney needs to turn to her.
Finally, Maz Pacheco is in the UAE with the Philippine national team at the moment. The social media team shared pictures of her training in preparation for the fixtures. When the rosters were released, however, she wasn't included on the bench. This could have more to do with her missing time earlier with this group due to injury as they look to reintegrate her back into their plans moving forward. From what can be seen, the Aston Villa Women's defender was not directly involved in her team's 4-1 win in Dubai.
