When Paris Saint-Germain loaned Marco Asensio (29) out to Aston Villa in January, they perhaps didn’t expect to be reunited with the Spaniard quite so soon.
However, an unlikely reunion is indeed nearing. PSG secured their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League thanks to their penalty shoot-out victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday. There, they will meet either Aston Villa or Club Brugge. The Premier League side carry a 3-1 lead into tonight’s game against the Belgians at Villa Park.
Should Aston Villa progress, Asensio will be allowed to face his parent club, PSG, L’Équipe understands. When the Spaniard was loaned out in January, no clause was included in the deal that would prevent him from playing against his parent club. An oversight from the Ligue 1 side?
Either way, Asensio now faces the curious scenario of facing the club with whom he is under contract until 2026. Since joining Aston Villa, the former Real Madrid man has five goals, one of which has come in the Champions League. Les Parisiens will be hoping that he doesn’t add to his tally against them.
