Aston Villa goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar said that she was proud of her performance as The Netherlands defeated South Africa 2-0 in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 round of 16 tie this morning.

The 23-year-old was named the Visa Player of the Match after pulling off a string of impressive saves. It was not a classic performance from the Dutch but their goalkeeper came away with an awful lot of individual credit.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Van Domselaar said that the victory and qualification for the quarter-finals was the most important factor.

“I’m really proud to be that (Visa Player of the Match),” Van Domselaar said. “The best thing is that we won the game 2-0. It wasn’t our best game but I’m happy to have been a part of it and to have kept a clean sheet.”

Since making her senior debut for The Netherlands in the February 2022 international window, Van Domselaar has quickly established herself as her nation’s first-choice goalkeeper. The youngster went on to say that she is unsure whether her performance against South Africa was her best for the national team but she was pleased to play an important role in the game.

She said “Last year, we had the European Championships. Of course, that was also a tournament where I was fortunate enough to stand up for the team and show my best form.

“I’m happy for the team that we won today and that I played an important part, that’s nice.

“I have no idea if that was my best game but I am proud of my performance and will look back on it fondly.”

The Netherlands will now face Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 quarter-finals on Friday.
