At least seven PAOK fans died in a road crash in western Romania on Tuesday while travelling from Greece to France to attend Thursday’s Europa League match at Olympique Lyon, Digi24 reports.
The collision occurred in Timis county. Multiple vehicles were involved, including a minibus and a tanker lorry. Initial investigations suggest the minibus, carrying 10 people, one more than its capacity, accelerated as it entered a ring road, struck the tanker, then ended up facing the wrong way and collided with another lorry.
Three others suffered injuries of varying severity and were taken to nearby hospitals.
The tanker was loaded with alcohol, but there were no leaks or other issues. Poor weather meant helicopters requested from Arad and Caransebeș could not fly. Several ambulances and a fire engine attended the scene.
PAOK said in a social media post that the club was devastated by another dark day for its community and offered sincere condolences to the families.
