Atalanta coach Sarri mourns death of his father, aged 97

Atalanta coach Sarri left pre-season training following the death of his father, aged 97. The club said in a statement that it was profoundly saddened by the passing of Amerigo Sarri.

Sarri did not take today’s session, which was led by assistant Marco Ianni, with the reason becoming clear a few hours later.

Amerigo Sarri was a cycling enthusiast and a post-war champion who retired aged 25.

He continued to play a large part in the sport’s success in Italy.

He was also part of a group that trained with legends such as Gino Bartali.
