Atalanta have confirmed that Italy international Gianluca Scamacca has successfully undergone surgery to repair a tendon issue in his thigh, but the striker is still expected to be ruled out for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

It has been a tough year for Scamacca, who picked up a cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a pre-season friendly against Parma, which caused him to miss the first six months of the 2024-25 season.

The 26-year-old did well to recover in time to feature in Serie A at the start of February, but his five minute cameo at the end of the 1-1 draw with Torino is expected to be his only contribution in the league this term.

Within that five minute cameo, Scamacca picked up a new injury to his thigh, which has turned out to be more severe than originally thought.

The injury needed surgery, which was completed on Wednesday at the Quironsalud hospital in Barcelona, the club have confirmed in an official statement.

It read: “Atalanta BC announces that Gianluca Scamacca underwent surgical treatment to repair the injury to the muscle-tendon of the rectus femoris in his right thigh today, Thursday February 6, 2025.

“The surgery, performed by Dr. Ramon Cugat Betomeu and his team at the Quironsalud Hospital in Barcelona, was perfectly successful.”
