According to Football Italia, Manchester United abandoned the €45m, including add-ons, signing of Ederson after post-World Cup medical checks, and Atalanta say he is happy to stay while they work on a new contract.
The move had been agreed last month, to be completed once Brazil’s 2026 World Cup campaign had ended.
On his return, United conducted intensive tests then withdrew, citing significant knee problems.
Director of sport Cristiano Giuntoli said at a press conference that the club had been stunned by the turnaround.
The price reflected his contract situation, with his current deal running only to the end of the season.
The 27-year-old joined Atalanta in 2022 for €22.9m from Salernitana, having arrived there from Corinthians six months earlier.
He has helped them win the Europa League and reach two Coppa Italia Finals, contributing 16 goals and six assists in 180 competitive games.
