Serie A fans and Atalanta would not be seeing Gianluca Scamacca for the first half of the season, as the Italian picked up a serious ACL and meniscus injury yesterday in a friendly.
It was confirmed today that the striker would stay out for the next six or seven months, ruling him out for the first half of the season. Atalanta already looking for potential replacements, as they face Real Madrid some days later in the Super Cup final.
Scamacca took to Twitter to express his disappointment about the injury and he wrote: “After a difficult summer, I couldn’t wait to come back to Bergamo to dedicate myself to what I love most. Unfortunately yesterday, I suffered a knee injury which ended the season. As you would expect, I’m in shock, I’m devastated and I can’t believe it.”
Scamacca was vital to Atalanta’s Champions League qualification and in the club’s march towards the Europa League title, as he scored a famous brace at Anfield against Liverpool.
He further said: “However, it is in my DNA to come back and be stronger. That is what I plan to do.”
The striker had impressed a lot last season and thrived under Gian Piero Gasperini. Injuries have been a consistent issue for Scamacca, who has always had a lot of talent and is one of the most complete strikers in the game right now.
