Athletic were met with a hostile reception on arrival at Mestalla, with their team bus targeted and anti-Basque abuse heard.

According to El Correo, around 3,000 Valencia supporters gathered outside the ground to greet Valverde’s side.

Objects were thrown at the Athletic bus as it approached the stadium.

Chants included an anti-Basque slur directed at the visitors.

Scenes like this have become a familiar feature of Athletic’s trips to Valencia.
