The coaching staff at La Liga outfit Athletic Club have this weekend been informed of just how long they are likely to be without the services of star goalkeeper Unai Simón.

This comes, for those who may have missed it, after he was forced under the knife.

Shot-stopper Simón, for his part, is of course fresh off playing a central role in the Spanish national team marching all the way to glory at Euro 2024.

The 27-year-old featured from the off in all but one of La Roja’s outings at the tournament, again proving his credentials as one of football’s very best between the posts.

Such exploits, however, actually came with Simón nursing a wrist injury.

Upon his return to base in Blibao this week, the goalkeeper therefore swiftly entered the surgery room, to deal with a case of ‘scaphoid-lunate instability’.

And, as alluded to above, this weekend, an insight into just how long as much is likely to keep the Spaniard on the sidelines has been provided.

The info comes courtesy of none other than the man to have operated on Simón’s wrist.

Speaking in an interview with El Larguero, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Dr. Francisco Piñal explained that:

“He will be out for four or five months because you have to be immobilised for two months, the time it takes for the ligament to heal. As much as Unai Simón is, inside we are all quite similar, that takes time to heal. Afterwards they will make him recover spectacularly compared to the rest of us mortals, but even so, I think he will not be able to be at his best for four or five months. That is why he started at this time, to give him time to recover.”
