Athletic Club Maintain Nico Williams Is Happy At Club Despite Growing Interest

Athletic Club Bilbao are insistent that Nico Williams is happy to remain at the club this season, despite growing interest in his services this summer. Williams has a whole host of clubs with significant admiration for his services, but the Spanish club believes the player is not currently interested in leaving the Basque region just yet.

The 21-year-old has been one of the standout performers of EURO 2024, helping his Spain side through to the quarterfinal last night with a well taken goal against Georgia. Williams had previous interest from Chelsea, who felt the finances involved in any potential deal would be too much for them to make allowances for this summer. Barcelona are another club with interest in the player, but there has yet to be a formal offer from any side as of yet.

Bilbao Counting On Williams:

Athletic Club’s president, Jon Uriarte, declared the player was happy at the club days ago, and AttackingFootball sources have been given further information suggesting that remains the club’s stance. Bilbao views Nico as a key player, and are counting on him to be in their squad on matchday one of the new La Liga season.

The player has a release clause of £49m, which has yet to be triggered by any club. Manchester United have the player on an internal list at the club should they decide to move for a right-winger, but as of now, that position is not a priority for Erik ten Hag’s side within this transfer window.

Williams scored eight goals and delivered 19 assists last season for Bilbao, capping off a remarkable season at just 21-years-old. His sights are now set on helping Spain win the EURO’s, with their next game coming against Germany on Friday.

A hot commodity this summer, but someone Athletic Bilbao feels is not going anywhere in the coming months.
