El Correo reports that Athletic have opened talks to extend Rego’s contract, which expires on 30 June, although the club hold a unilateral two-year option on pre-agreed terms.
The plan is to agree a fresh deal that supersedes the current one, with improved pay and a longer term. A first meeting was held on Wednesday at Lezama between director of football Mikel González and the player’s representatives.
Rego will be registered with the first team next season. This campaign he has not dropped to the reserves but has played throughout with the Bilbao Athletic-linked squad number 30. Both club and player want him to continue.
Used regularly by Ernesto Valverde, he has played 1,619 minutes across 31 matches and scored one goal, at San Mamés against Mallorca.
Rego is one of four players out of contract and is set to stay. The futures of Yuri, Yeray and Lekue remain unresolved, and persuading Berchiche to remain is a club priority.
Yeray has just completed a 10-month doping ban and all signs point to the club offering him a new deal. Lekue has said he will wait for the club’s decision, with no update yet.
