Atlanta United are set to reappoint Gerardo “Tata” Martino as their new head coach, according to a report from The Athletic. The move would mark a stunning return for the Argentine manager, who led the club to its first and only MLS Cup title in 2018.
Sources told The Athletic that Martino is the leading candidate and is expected to finalize an agreement with the club in the coming days.
While the deal has not yet been officially announced, multiple outlets have confirmed that discussions between Martino and Atlanta’s front office are in advanced stages.

Martino served as Atlanta United’s inaugural head coach from 2016 to 2018, helping establish the club as one of Major League Soccer’s most ambitious teams.
Under his leadership, Atlanta captured the 2018 MLS Cup, finished second in the Supporters’ Shield standings, and set league attendance records.
Since departing Atlanta, Martino has gone on to manage the Mexico national team and most recently Inter Miami CF, where he reunited with Lionel Messi in 2023.
Atlanta United are coming off one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history, missing the MLS Cup Playoffs after just five wins in 34 matches, eventually parting ways with head coach Ronny Deila.
The official announcement could come as early as this week, pending final contract details.
