The saga involving FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Julian Alvarez took a new step last night as the Argentine forward spoke to the media after the World Cup group stage game between Argentina and Austria. He took this opportunity to make public his desire to leave the Colchonero club, an action that has caused quite a stir in Spain.
The Catalans were already expecting and waiting for the striker to make such a public statement, which would put immense pressure on Atletico to start negotiating for his transfer, and give a lot of bargaining power to them.
Thus, while these comments would definitely have pleased the Blaugrana club, the Mattress Makers have, understandably, not taken too well to this action taken by their star player.
Although they have not made a public statement in this regard so far, Diario AS claims that some sources from the club talked to them, and denounced Barcelona for disrupting their team. These sources spoke quite harshly of the Catalan side, as they remembered the transfer of Antoine Griezmann in the past:
“In the past we’ve already seen how Barcelona operates… When Atlético were fighting for a Champions League tie against Juventus… Promising commissions to his [Griezmann’s] sister, his family, and the player himself…”
Meanwhile, these sources once again made it clear that Alvarez is not for sale:
“There is no amount for which Barcelona can buy Julián. He will not be transferred to Barcelona… Either they pay the release clause (€500 million), or nothing.”
The sources from the Madrid club denounced Barcelona’s way of working in the market in general and hinted at their club’s intention to take some legal steps:
“Everyone knows it’s a cheating club… But they’ve run into a club that’s not going to laugh it off.”
“Barcelona has acted like this on several occasions already. Just last summer with Nico Williams… It’s part of their strategy.”
“In recent hours there were lunches and meetings involving people close to Barcelona, already hinting at what was going to happen. Some were even laughing about it: ‘All that’s missing now is for the player to speak…'”
However, they admitted that the player has not mentioned the Blaugrana club in his comments:
“And Julián hasn’t mentioned Barcelona. We don’t know why.”
For now, without an official statement, it still remains to be seen how Atletico would officially react to this act from their star forward. However, the comments made by these sources make it clear that the Colchoneros are not too happy with the situation, and the dispute between them and Barcelona can aggravate in the coming days.
