The fallout from Barcelona’s defeat to Atletico Madrid continues to intensify, with the Madrid-based club now responding to the actions taken by Barcelona following the controversial encounter.

After losing 0-2, Barcelona chose to lodge an official complaint with UEFA, citing questionable refereeing decisions, most notably a potential penalty incident involving Marc Pubill.

However, the reaction from Atletico Madrid suggests that they view the situation very differently.

Atletico dismiss Barcelona’s complaint

According to reports from MARCA, Atletico Madrid are ‘astounded’ and unimpressed by Barcelona’s decision to escalate the matter.

From their perspective, the penalty incident is being blown out of proportion.

In fact, within the club, there is a belief that such moments are part of football and should not define the outcome of a match.

Furthermore, club insiders reportedly see the incident as little more than a minor detail, rather than something that had any meaningful influence on the final result.

Atletico are concerned

Beyond the specific incident, the outlet mentions that Atletico’s frustration appears to come from a bigger issue.

There is a growing belief that clubs like Barcelona and even Real Madrid hold significant power when it comes to altering stories around referees.

From Atletico’s viewpoint, this influence extends beyond the pitch.

They believe that media pressure, public statements, and repeated criticism can impact referees before matches even begin.

From their perspective, it creates an environment where officials are placed under constant scrutiny, potentially affecting their decision-making.

Derby tensions spill beyond the pitch

The rivalry between these clubs has now extended into off-field tensions.

Atletico Madrid have reportedly expressed frustration over what they interpret as a pattern of behaviour, where refereeing decisions become a focal point whenever results do not go in favour of the bigger clubs.

Meanwhile, at Barcelona, they see the refereeing decisions as significant enough to warrant formal action at the UEFA level.

Atletico, on the other hand, view the same situation as routine, part of the natural flow of a high-level football match.
