César Azpilicueta was one of Atlético’s standout performers in the club’s hard-fought win over Sevilla on Saturday and the experienced defender spoke to the media (via AS) after the game.

How important was the win?

“Very important. We left disappointed after the previous game. It was also a special day, just before Christmas, you could feel it in the atmosphere and we were looking forward to it.”

Girona

“We all would have liked to get more points [by now]. We’ve taken these three and in January there will be a battle, hopefully a good one. It’s up to us, the teams at the top are winning their games. Girona are above us, they are our next opponents and we have to try to beat them.

“The team has been working very hard for weeks, with games every three days. In some, we haven’t managed to be ourselves and this game was very important. We were down to ten men again, it’s very difficult, we were also finding it hard to keep a clean sheet. It’s a good way to end the year.”
