La Liga outfit Atlético Madrid have seen their appeal to have the ban handed down to midfield starlet Pablo Barrios overturned rejected.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have on Wednesday confirmed the news.
Barrios, for his part, picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign over the weekend.
As much came owing to a challenge during the 2nd-half of Atlético’s hard-fought 2-1 downing of Villarreal at La Cerámica.
Speaking to to Movistar, as cited by Diario Sport, post-match, the 20-year-old revealed his hope that the card would ultimately be rescinded upon review.
This came amid the suggestion that the challenge ‘wasn’t even a foul’:
“Let’s see if there’s any luck and they can take it away from me. I already mentioned to the referee that for me it wasn’t even a foul. When they substituted me, they told me the same thing. We all make mistakes.”
The brass at the Wanda Metropolitano, evidently, were of a similar opinion, therefore launching an appeal to the Competition Committee to have their midfield talent’s yellow overturned.
As alluded to above, however, as much has since been turned down.
It now remains to be seen whether the Atlético board deem it appropriate to escalate the situation to the Appeal’s Committee.
As things stand, though, Barrios will be suspended for the Rojiblancos’ crucial La Liga showdown with Girona a week from Saturday.
