Atletico Madrid have made contact with Ligue 1 club Strasbourg to explore a potential move for midfielder Habib Diarra, according to RMC Sport.
The Spanish giants regularly scouted the Senegalese international last season and have contacted his representatives. They are yet to submit a concrete offer.
Some Premier League clubs are also interested in Diarra, whose valuation could exceed €25 million.
After rising through the club’s youth ranks, the 21-year-old has established himself as a key cog in Strasbourg’s midfield.
He registered four goals and five assists last season, accentuated by consistent performances, to help Strasbourg secure a place in Europa Conference League qualifiers.
He switched his allegiance from France to Senegal last season and has earned 11 caps for his new country.
Diarra grabbed the headlines after scoring in Senegal’s shock win over England in a friendly earlier this month.
Atletico are looking to overhaul the squad this summer after finishing trophyless last season.
The recent elimination from the Club World Cup group stage has further highlighted their struggles.
Diarra would be a breath of fresh air to Atletico’s midfield. His ball-progression skills, deadly presence in the box, physicality and work rate make him an ideal fit for manager Diego Simeone.
Atletico are in advanced talks to sign Real Betis defensive midfielder Johnny Cardoso. Villarreal playmaker Alex Baena is also on the verge of moving to the Wanda Metropolitano.
