Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero this summer.
The Spanish side are seeking reinforcements and view Romero as an ideal addition. Romero is the vice-captain at Spurs and viewed as a key figure in North London, though has endured an injury-hit campaign. He has made just 14 league appearances due to fitness issues in a difficult season for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Spurs are 14th in the Premier League table and set to miss out on Champions League qualification as things stand. The Europa League offers an alternative route to qualification, but Atletico are monitoring Romero’s situation at Spurs.
Should Spurs miss out on the Champions League, Romero could push for an exit and will have just two years to run on his contract this summer.
Atletico are hopeful of reaching an agreement for the 26-year-old, with Diego Simeone a big admirer of his compatriot. Romero signed for Spurs from Atalanta for a fee of £42.5m in 2021 and has made 115 appearances for the club in all competitions.
He’s been a pivotal part of Argentina’s recent success, forming part of the side that won the World Cup in 2022 and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. He was name in the Team of the Tournament in each Copa America triumph.
