Arsenal’s quest to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino has become more complicated, with more clubs expressing interest in the Spaniard.

According to journalist Belen Sanchez Garcia, Atletico Madrid are the latest club to join the race to sign Merino, who is poised to leave Sociedad this summer.

Merino has become a coveted midfielder after helping Spain win the 2024 European Championship title in Germany.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente primarily utilised the 28-year-old as an impact substitute, but he proved decisive in the quarter-final showdown against tournament hosts Germany.

Merino came off the bench and won the game for Spain with a last-minute header to propel La Roja to the next round.

The former Newcastle United midfielder has one year left on his Sociedad contract and is open to exploring a new challenge.

With several clubs keen to sign him, the player will make the final decision on his next move, although none of the potential suitors have submitted a formal bid.

Merino’s contract includes a £50 million release clause, but Sociedad are willing to negotiate a lower fee as his contract expires next summer.

They’re demanding a fee north of £30m. While Arsenal can comfortably match their demands, they need to sell players before reinforcing their squad.

The Gunners have had a quiet summer transfer window. David Raya is their only acquisition after making his initial loan deal permanent following a successful debut campaign.

Despite their lack of activity, Arsenal want to sign a new left-back, midfielder, striker and potentially a wide player this summer.

Merino has been identified as the ideal signing to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s midfield options, but competition from La Liga giants Atletico and Barcelona will be fierce.

Atletico are already in talks to sign Robin Le Normand from Sociedad, so the decent rapport between the clubs could give them an edge over Arsenal.
