La Liga giants Atlético Madrid are on the verge of securing reinforcements to the club’s defensive ranks for the season ahead. This comes amid the understanding that the Rojiblancos are all set to land Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur.

Stopper Romero has of course emerged as a leading transfer target in the boardroom at the Metropolitano over recent weeks.

After the Argentine made clear his intention to secure a departure from north London before the summer is out, Diego Simeone set his sights firmly on the signature of his fellow countryman.

Amid an ongoing search for fresh blood at the heart of defence in Spain’s capital, Romero is considered the ideal profile – experienced, a natural leader, and technically sound.

And as alluded to above, if the latest word stemming from the media early this week is anything to go by, then Simeone and co. now appear closer than ever to landing their man.
