Atletico Madrid have reportedly pulled the plug on a move for Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra, according to the latest coming out of Spain. Los Colchoneros agreed a €25m deal plus €5m in variables and a 15% sell-on fee for Guerra on Sunday.
Los Rojiblancos moved for Guerra amid silence from Conor Gallagher on their offer, but the Chelsea midfielder is set to complete his move to Atletico today. Guerra was due to travel to Madrid on Monday, and his medical was booked for Tuesday, for which he had permission from Valencia to attend.
Amid reports that Los Colchoneros could still do both deals, Relevo now report that Atletico have aborted the move. Gallagher was always the first choice, and his green light just minutes before Atletico’s deadline means Atleti will not move for Guerra.
It remains to be seen what happens with Guerra. He had attracted the attentions of Girona, Real Sociedad, and even Barcelona, but none had reached a deal with Los Che for him, when he looked destined to move on. If Atletico have aborted the deal for Guerra, then it looks highly likely the Gallagher move will be consummated.
