Atlético Madrid sign Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero from Tottenham on five-year deal to 2031 | OneFootball

Atlético Madrid have signed Argentina defender Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero from Tottenham on a five-year contract to 30 June 2031, the club said in a statement.

Following an agreement between the clubs, he flew to Madrid on Thursday, completed his medical on Friday and formalised the deal before joining training under Diego Simeone.

Atlético will pay around €40 million. He becomes their fourth signing for the new campaign, after left-back Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen, midfielder Morten Hjulmand for €40 million plus €5 million in add-ons from Sporting, and winger Kang-in Lee for €35 million from Paris Saint-Germain.

Romero links up with compatriots Juan Musso, Giuliano Simeone and Julián Alvarez. From last season’s group, Clement Lenglet has joined Benfica, Nahuel Molina has moved to Roma, Thiago Almada to River Plate and Antoine Griezmann to Orlando City, with Matteo Ruggeri’s switch to Aston Villa pending official confirmation.

The right-sided centre-back is 28, a 2022 world champion in Qatar and a finalist in 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Since his 2021 debut he has won 58 caps for Argentina, scoring four goals.

Romero made 156 appearances across the past four seasons for Tottenham, who paid €52 million to sign him from Atalanta in summer 2022. Earlier in his career he featured for Atalanta, Genoa and Belgrano.
