Atletico Madrid star Axel Witsel is set to sign a contract extension at the club this month.
The 35-year-old has played a key role for Los Rojiblancos since joining the club in 2022 as part of a move from midfield to defence.
Witsel agreed a 12 month extension last summer and he is expected to mirror that approach in the coming weeks.
The veteran campaigner has agreed to come out of international retirement to join up with the Belgium squad for Euro 2024.
Discussions are ongoing between Witsel’s representatives and the club and he is aiming for resolution before Belgium start the tournament.
“We’re currently discussing a new contract with Atletico. I want it to be fixed before the Euros. The objective is to stay in Madrid. I feel good there and so does my family”, as per reports from Marca.
Witsel will be an option in defence and midfield for Domenico Tedesco at Euro 2024 after over 12 months away from international football.
He could be partnered at centre back by Belgium’s leading appearance maker, in 37-year-old Jan Vertonghen, with Witsel second on the cap list, with a combined tally of 284.
