Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez remains alive, but Atletico Madrid are not changing their position after Joan Laporta publicly confirmed the club’s interest.
The Barca president explained that Deco made an official club-to-club offer for the Argentine forward, while also insisting that Barcelona have acted with respect towards Atletico.
As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Laporta said:
“Deco made an offer of a certain amount for this player. We know that the player has wanted to come to Barca for some time, since before he was at City.”
Laporta added:
“We made this offer with all respect for Atletico; they have all my respect, both Cerezo and Gil Marin. They had the offer and told us they did not plan to sell because they did not have an alternative.”
Atletico do not want to publicly assess Laporta’s words, but they believe the comments strengthen the position they have already taken.
That position has two parts. First, Atletico insist Julian is not for sale and that they are counting on him for next season.
Second, they intend to continue with their formal complaint to FIFA and the RFEF against Barcelona, accusing the club of pressuring a player under contract until 2030.
For Barcelona, this is now a test of patience and control. Julian is clearly the chosen striker, and Laporta’s words show that the club are serious about the operation.
Barca must be careful. Wanting a player is one thing. Getting Atletico to sell their star to a direct rival is another.
The encouraging part for supporters is that Barcelona have put their interest on the table openly. The complicated part is that Atletico are digging in.
This saga is far from finished. If Julian keeps pushing and Atletico eventually need a solution, Barca will be there. However, for now, the Metropolitano door remains firmly closed.
