Atletico Madrid produced a clinical display to defeat Barcelona 2–0 at Camp Nou in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, taking a significant advantage into the return leg in Madrid.

The visitors had not won at Camp Nou since 2006 but goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth ensured Diego Simeone’s side ended that long wait in dramatic fashion.

Barcelona actually started the match as the stronger team and dominated possession for much of the opening half.

Marcus Rashford was heavily involved early on, forcing saves and constantly threatening Atletico’s defensive line.

The hosts created several promising opportunities and also had a goal ruled out after Lamine Yamal was judged offside earlier in the move.

Despite Barcelona’s attacking pressure, Atletico remained dangerous on the counterattack and looked to exploit space behind the home defence whenever possible.

The match turned just before half-time when Giuliano Simeone broke through on goal before being fouled by Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi.

Referee Istvan Kovacs initially showed a yellow card for the challenge but was asked by the video assistant referee to review the incident.

After checking the replay on the pitchside monitor, the referee upgraded the decision to a red card, leaving Barcelona with ten men.

Atletico immediately capitalised on the moment as Alvarez stepped up to take the resulting free-kick.

The Argentine forward curled a superb effort into the corner to give the visitors the lead.

Barcelona responded strongly after the break despite the numerical disadvantage and pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Rashford again came close when his powerful free-kick struck the crossbar, while the hosts continued to create chances through sustained attacking pressure.

However, Atletico remained organised defensively and gradually began to absorb the pressure.

As Barcelona committed more players forward, spaces began to appear for the visitors on the counterattack.

Those gaps proved decisive late in the match when Atletico produced a swift attacking move.

Matteo Ruggeri delivered a low cross into the penalty area and Sorloth arrived to guide the ball into the net to double Atletico’s advantage.

Barcelona finished the match with far more attempts on goal but lacked the finishing touch required to convert their dominance into goals.

Atletico, by contrast, were ruthless with their opportunities and left Camp Nou with a commanding lead.

The result places Simeone’s side firmly in control of the tie ahead of the second leg in Madrid next week, while Barcelona now face a difficult task if they are to overturn the deficit and reach the Champions League semi-finals.
