Despite thoroughly outplaying AC Milan in the derby, Inter slumped to a morale-wracking 1-0 defeat.

Indeed, Cristian Chivu deserved to avoid defeat in his maiden coaching experience in this blockbuster Serie A fixture.

However, a missed penalty from Hakan Calhanoglu, coupled with numerous impressive saves from Mike Maignan, kept Inter at bay.

Determined to recover from their first scoring blank of the season, Inter will be out to maintain their perfect Champions League record.

With four wins from four games, Chivu’s men are on the verge of securing automatic last-16 qualification.

Yet, the Nerazzurri would be naive to take anything for granted, with several high-profile matches coming up next.

“Milan and Atletico Madrid have similar playing styles,” Barella stated. “In fact, we compared them.

“We need to play the same type of match as we did on Sunday;we only lacked a goal there.

“And we’ll try to be less ‘pretty’… We play attractive football, and we must not lose that trait, but scoring is what matters.

“Football is like this: when things go well, you have to come on TV and laugh.

“Then in the dressing room, you need positivity; negativity doesn’t help anyone.

“The defeat against Milan stays with us because we didn’t take anything home.

“The league is long; we’re doing well in the Champions League, but that’s long too. We’ll do everything we can in every competition.”

Furthermore, Barella outlined Inter’s lofty European ambitions: “We’ll try to finish top.”

Meanwhile, speaking to InterTV via FCInterNews, Barella insisted that the derby loss was just a one-off.

“Let’s start from the assumption that no match in the Champions League is easy,” Barella claimed. “Now we’ll face slightly stronger opponents, with all due respect to those we’ve already met.

“We’ll try right away to show that this is our level; we want to keep going on this trajectory.”

Asked how Inter plan to cope with an intimidating atmosphere at the Metropolitano Stadium, Barella replied: “As we’ve always done – trying to give our best and being aware of our qualities and those of the opponent.

“It’s a match that I hope will be enjoyable to watch.

“There’s always room for improvement; that’s what I’ve tried to do over the years.
