Confirmation of the punishment handed down to Atlético Madrid for the club’s part in the chaos in this past weekend’s Madrid Derby has this evening been forthcoming online.

The Atlético faithful, of course, were responsible for the first capital derby of the campaign being brought to a complete halt on Sunday.

After being riled up by the celebrations of Real no.1 Thibaut Courtois to Los Blancos’ opener in the clash, the south end of the Wanda Metropolitano responded by raining down on the Belgian with a series of projectiles.

So serious did the situation become, that the two sets of players were ultimately sent back to their respective dressing rooms, amid threats of the matchup being abandoned entirely.

In the end, play was resumed, with Atlético having battled their way to a share of the spoils in a 1-1 stalemate.

But the fallout continued long beyond the full-time whistle, amid widespread calls for the hosts’ supporters to be punished for their actions.

And, as alluded to above, on Wednesday, confirmation of as much has arrived.

As per a report from Marca:

‘The Competition Committee of the Spanish Football Federation has decided to close the south end of the Metropolitano (sectors 127 to 133) for three games, with a total of 5,000 seats and an additional fine of 45,000 euros.’
