Real Madrid have had a club-record €150m (£130m) offer for Julian Alvarez rejected by city rivals Atletico Madrid.
The bid finally revealed the “galactico” that president Florentino Perez had promised to chase if re-elected.
Perez made that pledge last week. Having held onto power on Sunday, he wasted no time delivering on it.
A board meeting on Tuesday signed off the move for the 26-year-old Argentina forward.
Atletico’s answer was swift and emphatic. They turned the offer down, pointing to Alvarez’s enormous €500m (£430m) release clause. Real, unusually, confirmed the whole episode in a formal statement.
“Real Madrid CF announces that, following the meeting of the board of directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez,” it read.
“After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atletico de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.”
Atletico, though, were in no mood for diplomacy. They quoted Real’s statement on X with a string of laughing emojis, then went further. “You may have mistaken politeness for gratitude, but just to be clear: we are not thanking you for anything,” they posted.
“We are neither considering nor evaluating any offers for Julian. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than Barcelona does?”
A parting shot followed. “P.S. Taking advantage of the good relationship with your new president, let’s see if you stop ‘stealing’ players from our Academy,” Atletico added. “Thanks a lot, @realmadrid!”
The forward remains in heavy demand regardless. Barcelona saw a reported €100m bid rejected only last week, with Arsenal and PSG also credited with interest.
Alvarez, a 2022 World Cup winner, joined Atletico from Manchester City in an £81.5m deal in 2024.
He scored 20 goals in 49 appearances last season as Diego Simeone’s side finished fourth and reached the Champions League semi-finals. His contract runs until 2030.
