Atlético Madrid were left frustrated after surrendering two separate leads in a chaotic 3-3 draw with Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League play-off in Belgium.
Diego Simeone’s side made the perfect start. Julián Álvarez calmly converted an early penalty after a VAR review spotted a handball, and Atlético looked firmly in control when Ademola Lookman turned in a corner at the back post just before the break.
Yet the two-goal cushion proved anything but secure. Brugge came flying out after half-time and struck twice in quick succession. Raphael Onyedika reacted quickest after Jan Oblak had made a sharp save, before Nicolò Tresoldi bundled in from close range to turn the tie on its head.
Atlético regrouped and thought they had edged back in front for good when Joel Ordóñez diverted Marcos Llorente’s cross into his own net with 10 minutes remaining.
But there was one final twist. Deep into stoppage time, Christos Tzolis drilled home from a tight angle to ensure the sides head to Madrid level.
It leaves everything to play for in the return leg, with Atlético still searching for a first away win against Brugge.
