Villarreal president Fernando Roig has on Sunday dropped a considerable hint surrounding the potential summer departure of Álex Baena.
This comes amid a concerted push on the part of Atlético Madrid to bring in the Spanish international.
Attacking midfielder Baena, for his part, is fresh off another stellar campaign on the books of the aforementioned Villarreal.
Continuing to build on his reputation as one of the standout creative talents in La Liga, the 23-year-old racked up an impressive seven goals and 10 assists in the league alone.
Such production has long piqued the interest of those at Atlético, who are understood to have earmarked Baena as a priority signing with a view to next season.
And if the latest comments on the part of Villarreal’s president are anything to go by, then the Yellow Submarine’s supporters should not be at all surprised if their side’s midfield maestro does ultimately depart.
Drawn on Baena’s future whilst speaking to DAZN, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, on Sunday, Fernando Roig admitted:
“I hope I don’t have to say goodbye to Baena. There are three sides to this: someone who loves him and someone who wants to leave… In life, you can’t clip your wings. Everyone has to fly, and Villarreal has to continue.”
