In a team full of players making their Champions League debuts, Alejandro Garnacho was one of the most experienced players in the Chelsea squad last night as they lost to Bayern.
He was asked to speak to the club’s TV channel afterwards, and he had a measured take on the 3-1 defeat.

“I think we did a good game, but obviously we know Bayern Munich are a strong team and they were playing at home as well. So I think we will learn from this defeat,” the winger said.
“The game was anyone’s to win, we created chances they created chances, they got a penalty too. But they scored more than us, that’s football you know. But I thought we competed really well.
“I think it’s a good experience to play in the Champions League, in the best competition, everyone wants to play here, there are a lot of very good teams, you have to be ready and be strong.”
We would dispute that a little – Chelsea had chances and weren’t totally outplayed, but they also didn’t really look like a team that believed that could get a result once Bayern had their noses in front.
Ignoring the result, Garnacho at least got another chunk of minutes as he looks to build up his fitness and begin competing for a starting role. That’s two matches in a row he’s come off the bench, and he’s surely in contention to start against his old club Manchester United on Saturday. That could get explosive.
With fellow new signing Jamie Gittens struggling in his starts so far and lots of tired player in need of rotation, we can’t be far away from Garnacho’s first Chelsea start.
