OM need a response in Ligue one, with scrutiny on Geronimo Rulli, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. According to L'Équipe, Benjamin Pavard skipped Friday training after Roberto De Zerbi made him a doubt and he will not start after the 0-2 loss to Nantes.
Rulli, 33, still produces big saves but his high-risk distribution has hurt. Against Nantes his mistakes outweighed his stops, and in the Trophée des champions against Paris-SG it finished 2-2 before a 1-4 shootout defeat after a mis-hit pass preceded Ousmane Dembélé’s opener.
In the Cup he cedes to Jeffrey De Lange, who often deputises after international breaks, and De Zerbi still values his work against runners despite the risks. With a deal to 2027, no extension talks have begun and his outlook is unclear.
Höjbjerg, 30, was rested for the 9-0 win at Bayeux, then ran on the Stade Michel-d’Ornano turf to keep rhythm. The club will not let him leave this winter despite Italian interest, and he is seen as near-captain with Leonardo Balerdi used less.
Aubameyang, 36, has dealt with muscular pain since Monaco on 14 December, Gabon’s early AFCON exit and a short, later lifted, suspension. De Zerbi excused him from Tuesday’s Normandy trip, he is back training and now contests the No nine role with Amine Gouiri. The coach awaits a reinforcement after Robinio Vaz joined AS Rome and believes Aubameyang can still contribute over the next four months, though beyond that, as with Rulli and Höjbjerg, futures could lie elsewhere.
