Deportivo have completed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a deal to 30 June 2028. The club said in a statement that the 37-year-old striker arrives to add goals and experience to their project.
Olympique de Marseille sanctioned his departure for a €1.5 million fee as they looked to ease their wage bill. Deportivo had pursued the deal for over a month, while Aubameyang sought detailed personal and sporting information before a second spell in Spain after his post-pandemic stint at Barcelona.
Talks accelerated early this week, then the agreement was finalised between Thursday night and Friday morning as the forward underwent medical tests in Madrid. He is due to land at Alvedro on Saturday and will immediately pull on the blue and white shirt. Integration into Antonio Hidalgo’s squad is set for next week alongside Bil Nsongo and Zakaria Eddahchouri.
The move follows Deportivo’s payment of Leo Román’s release clause, the goalkeeper having been named as a reserve by Luis de la Fuente for the World Cup. Until now signings had been limited to players aged up to 26, including Gijselhart, Román, Ede, Amatucci and Jensen. Aubameyang becomes the third thirtysomething with an established place in the Abegondo dressing room after Germán Parreño and Ximo Navarro.
Milan recruited him to their academy in 2007 and, two decades on, he joins Deportivo with close to 400 goals in around 800 youth and senior games across Spain, Germany, France, Italy and England. His prolific spell at Borussia Dortmund was followed by Arsenal, then Barcelona and Marseille, and in 2016 he was named African Footballer of the Year.
