Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has hit the ground running at Deportivo, scoring two in two LaLiga outings and taking two MVP awards. Next up is Valencia, a side he has punished repeatedly.

According to AS, the 37-year-old chose Depor after closely assessing the sporting project, the facilities and his family needs, and his nephew Nelson is on trial with the club’s Juvenil. He has not travelled to Galicia to wind down, he intends to compete.

If he scores on Sunday he would begin his top-flight career at Depor with three consecutive scoring matches, a feat matched in Primera only by Bebeto and Rábade in the 1950s. His finishes so far have come from sharp runs, neat control and ruthless composure.

He has seven goals in four matches against Valencia, including a sparkling hat-trick for Barcelona in a 1-4 win at Mestalla. Adama Traoré came on in the 81st minute that day, he has now joined Deportivo but lacks a pre-season and is not in the squad, though he and Aubameyang are already close off the pitch.

His other Mestalla treble arrived for Arsenal in the 2018-19 Europa League semi-final. After a 3-1 first leg at the Emirates, with a Lacazette brace and an added-time Aubameyang strike, Valencia led the return through Kevin Gameiro, who finished with two, but Arsenal won 4-2 as Aubameyang completed his hat-trick.

Despite Aubameyang’s start, Deportivo have drawn both matches on their top-flight return after eight years and chase a first win at Riazor on Sunday. Valencia, coached by Corberán, have one point from two home games, a 0-0 draw with Celta and a 0-1 loss to Betis. Home backing should swell after a truce between the club and the peñas ended the opening-day protest.
