The Bundesliga returns this weekend with an intriguing clash between FC Augsburg and RB Leipzig at the WWK Arena. While the two sides sit at opposite ends of the table, both come into Saturday’s meeting with something to prove - Augsburg seeking consistency after a turbulent start, and Leipzig aiming to keep the pressure on at the top of the league. Who will come out on top?
Augsburg enter Matchday 8 sitting 13th in the standings with just seven points from seven games. Their campaign has been defined by inconsistency: flashes of promise, such as their hard-fought win against Wolfsburg and a gritty draw in Cologne, have been overshadowed by defensive lapses and a worrying run of four straight defeats earlier in the season.
Coach Sandro Wagner has emphasised resilience and compactness, but his side’s back line - which has conceded two or more goals in five of their last seven home games - remains a major concern.
Leipzig, meanwhile, arrive in Bavaria in a great mood: Ole Werner’s team are currently second in the Bundesliga, after overtaking Borussia Dortmund last week, with sixteen points from seven matches, having won five, drawn one, and lost only once.
Their dynamic attacking football, driven by a youthful core, has impressed once again this season. With Willi Orban and Castello Lukeba anchoring a sturdy defence and the likes of Johan Bakayoko, Antonio Nusa, and Romulo leading the charge up front, Leipzig look well-balanced and full of confidence - they want to keep some pressure on the seemingly unbeatable Rekordmeister Bayern Munich, who are already five points ahead of Leipzig.
The historical record offers little comfort for Augsburg: They haven’t beaten Leipzig in the Bundesliga since 2017, and recent meetings have been heavily tilted in Leipzig’s favour. The visitors have taken points from every one of the last nine encounters, often doing so in dominant fashion (two 4-0 wins in the past three years!).
Augsburg will be desperate to break that run - and to prove that their home ground can still be a difficult place for top sides to visit!
Wagner is expected to stick with his preferred 3-4-3 setup, relying on midfielders Fabian Rieder and Robin Fellhauer to provide energy and structure in the middle of the park. Youngster Mert Kömür has been one of the few bright sparks going forward, while Augsburg’s wingers and fullbacks will look to exploit counterattacking opportunities whenever Leipzig push high up the pitch, which should happen quite frequently.
With the return of star player Alexis Claude-Maurice Augsburg regain one of their brightest stars from last season - he could turn out to be a game changer for Sandro Wagner's side.
Leipzig, on the other hand, are likely to field their familiar 4-3-3 formation. Their build-up play through Nicolas Seiwald and Assan Ouédraogo allows them to transition swiftly from defence to attack, and their wide forwards have been clinical in exploiting space between full-backs. Werner’s side average nearly two goals per game this season and have scored in every away fixture so far - a statistic that underlines their attacking threat.
One key player to point out would be Christoph Baumgartner, who has been in stellar form over the past few weeks for Leipzig, especially one week ago against HSV.
The battle for midfield control could decide this contest: if Augsburg can disrupt Leipzig’s rhythm and force mistakes, they may create openings through quick transitions. But if Leipzig are allowed to dictate tempo and possession, they have the quality to overwhelm the hosts. Discipline, concentration, and the ability to withstand sustained pressure will be vital for Augsburg to stay competitive in this one.
