Augsburg vs. Union preview: Who can finish on a high note?

Augsburg

Augsburg are sitting in 11th place after winning 11, drawing 10 and losing 12 of their 33 Bundesliga matches this season. Jess Thorup’s side are currently on course for back-to-back 11th-place finishes, although they could still finish in 10th or drop down to 12th depending on how the final day of the season pans out.

The Fuggerstädter will enter matchday 34 on a poor run of form that has seen them take just one point from four matches. They played out a goalless affair with Eintracht Frankfurt, before they lost three consecutive games against Bayer Leverkusen, Holstein Kiel and Stuttgart. They were forced to play around 80 minutes with 10 men in the recent 4-0 defeat to Stuttgart following Samuel Essende’s early red card, as Augsburg failed to trouble the scorers for the third time in four matches.

They have also found goals hard to come by in recent outings at the WWK Arena, having netted just three goals in their previous six home matches (W1, D3, L2). The hosts will hope to find their shooting boots for Saturday’s contest, as they look to complete a league double over Union following a 2-0 victory in January’s reverse fixture.

Team News

Augsburg are without the injured duo of Mergim Berisha and Yusuf Kabadayi, while Essende is suspended after being sent off last weekend.

Union Berlin

Union are set to finish the campaign in 13th position after winning nine, drawing 10 and losing 14 of their 33 league matches this term. Die Eisernen recently put together an eight-game unbeaten run (W3, D5), which was ultimately ended by a heavy 3-0 defeat in last Saturday’s home meeting with Heidenheim.

While that represented their first loss since March 2, Union are now winless in five matches because the defeat to Heidenheim was preceded by four consecutive draws. Their hopes of ending their winless run will be tempered by the fact that they have won just one of their 11 top-flight meetings with Augsburg (D4, L6). That sole victory took place at Stadion An der Alten Försterei in January 2020, meaning they are still searching for their first Bundesliga away win against the Fuggerstädter.

They at least fared well in their recent road trips, having won three, drawn two and lost just one of their previous six away league games.

Team News

Union boss Steffen Baumgart is unable to call upon the services of Jérôme Roussillon, Aljoscha Kemlein, Diogo Leite, Robert Skov and Jeong Woo-yeong.
