FC Augsburg have confirmed Robin Fellhauer’s discharge from a local hospital following a nasty aerial collision in yesterday evening’s Bundesliga “Top-Spiel” against Bayern Munich. The 27-year-old has been diagnosed with a severe concussion and minor facial fractures that will not require surgery. Fellhauer remained unresponsive for several minutes after being fouled by Bayern’s Sacha Boey late in injury time.

The scenes at the WWK Arena were indeed grim yesterday. Fellhauer’s family, in attendance at the match, were only able to breathe a sigh of relief after the player was stretchered into the locker room and revived. In addition to pillorying Boey and Bayern after the match, FCA head coach Sandro Wagner called the scenes involving Fellhauer’s family “haunting images“.

Fellhauer has already well exceeded expectations at his new club. Signed this summer from Elversberg intended to serve primarily as a defensive midfield addition, Wagner has surprisingly turned to the Mannheim-native to play an important role in attack. Fellhauer has started on the right-hand-side of the second attacking axis in both of Augsburg’s Bundesliga fixtures thus far.

On Saturday, Fellhauer also rose to the occasion to serve as a fullback on both sides. Wager lost both of his wingbacks – Marius Wolf and Dimitrios Giannoulis – to injury over the course of the Bayern match. Fellhauer played in three separate positions during the 2-3 loss. Thankfully for the Fuggerstädter, the coming international break accords Fellhauer, Giannoulis, and Wolf time to heal.
