Corinthians’ Deliberative Council has expelled former president Augusto Melo from the club’s membership after he attempted to reclaim power following his impeachment in May last year. According to Globo.com, the vote took place at Parque São Jorge on Monday night.
Of the 156 councillors present, 147 backed expulsion, five opposed and four abstained, with lifetime members unanimous. Melo, president from 2024 to 2025, is no longer a club associate.
Hours earlier he sought a court injunction to halt the ballot, but no ruling came before voting closed. Hundreds of fans gathered outside with banners supporting his removal.
On 31 May 2025 he and allies tried to retake office after councillor Maria Angela de Sousa Ocampos claimed control of the council and said she had annulled the impeachment vote. Acting president Osmar Stabile and Romeu Tuma Júnior did not recognise the move.
Melo was impeached over alleged irregularities in the VaideBet sponsorship, breach of the General Sports Law and violations of the club statute. He also faces criminal proceedings for alleged criminal association, money laundering and theft.
It was the third exclusion of a former president in a week. Last Monday Andrés Sanchez was expelled over misuse of a corporate card, while on Thursday Duílio Monteiro Alves resigned his lifetime membership and council posts. Cases involving Maria Angela, Mario Mello Junior, Paulo Juricic and Ronaldo Fernandez Tomé will be heard on eight June alongside eight others.
