Aurélien Tchouaméni said Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Benfica, which sealed a place in the Champions League last 16, was a win against racism. L'Équipe reports that the comments came after Wednesday’s play-off second leg.

The French midfielder had levelled for Madrid before Vinicius Junior struck the decisive goal.

The remarks referenced the first leg, when Vinicius accused Argentine forward Gianluca Prestianni of calling him a monkey while hiding under his shirt. Madrid had won that game 1-0.

Tchouaméni accepted Madrid had not produced their best display, and said some matters are bigger than the match and bigger than football. He also felt UEFA’s provisional suspension of Prestianni was the best decision.

An anti-racism banner was unfurled at the Bernabéu before kick-off. During the game, a supporter was ejected after being filmed making a Nazi salute, and the club immediately requested his banning.
