The 1975 Campeonato Catarinense is a landmark in the history of Avaí Futebol Clube. The Lion comfortably topped its groups in the first two stages of the competition and qualified for the final, to be played in a best-of-three series against Figueirense. After one defeat (3-2) and one victory (3-0), the grand finale was played on August 17, at the opponent’s ground. The final whistle sealed the Lion’s 1-0 victory, with a goal by Juti, and the conquest of another title.
The end of that contest also marked the beginning of a saga. A passionate Avaí supporter, young João Carlos da Cunha, known as Carlinhos, was convinced that the victory and the trophy would belong to the Lion. But if everything went as expected, the match ball would be his.
“He wanted to keep a memento of that historic moment. So he went to the match carrying a metal needle used to inflate balls and ready to invade the pitch at the end of the game. As soon as the referee blew for full time, he ran onto the field and, after fighting others for possession of the ball, managed to grab it. He deflated the ball with the metal needle, tucked it under his shirt, and ran home, which was just a few meters from the stadium,” says the niece of the devoted supporter, Adriana Helena de Sousa Gezak.
Shortly afterward, with the support of his brother-in-law, Colonel Saulo Nunes de Sousa, Carlinhos sought out the Avaí players, who were staying at Hotel Valerim, and collected the champions’ autographs.
Sadly, Carlinhos passed away just two years later, the victim of heart problems. The historic ball then came under the care of Luciano Carlos de Sousa, who was still a child at the time and preserved the relic for years, trying on different occasions to hand it over to Avaí Futebol Clube.
Now, after more than five decades, the ball and all the memory it carries return to Avaí. The relic was donated to vice president Carlos Schmidt by Carlinhos’s niece, Adriana Sousa, who was at Ressacada on Friday, July 17. “The handover of the ball represents not only the preservation of a relic from the 1975 Santa Catarina title, but also a tribute to the memory of Carlinhos and Luciano, two supporters who dedicated part of their lives to Avaí’s history and passion.”
Avaí vice president Carlos Schmidt celebrated the opportunity. “Avaí is the greatest champion in Santa Catarina and has a glorious history that must be celebrated permanently. The opportunity to preserve this relic, which will now remain in our Memorial, is a source of joy and pride for all of us.”
