The Prefect of Naples has forbidden the sale of away tickets for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Champions League match on 4 November against SSC Napoli.

Early on Tuesday afternoon, Eintracht Frankfurt was informed at the same time as the general public that the Prefect of Naples had issued an order on Monday forbidding the sale of match tickets by SSC Napoli to inhabitants of the city of Frankfurt.

As part of a meeting scheduled in advance at the Italian Ministry for the Interior in Rome, which was attended not only by federal and municipal security agencies but also a delegation from Eintracht Frankfurt and representatives of UEFA, the reasons behind the order were laid out in detail, leading to controversial debate.

Reschke summarises meeting in Rome

“The result is that, unfortunately, we have to accept the fact that the strategy of excluding away fans from high-risk Italian football matches – both domestic and European – has become common practice,” said board member Philipp Reschke after the meeting at the Ministry for the Interior in the Italian capital. “We shared the opinion that after the events of 2023, this would certainly have been an exceptionally high-risk match, but excluding fans is not the right answer to this issue. German venues in particular are best proof of this in European football.”

As part of the meeting held in late afternoon, the authorities announced further measures to prevent Eintracht fans to the greatest possible extent from travelling to Naples for the fourth match of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League on 4 November.

The purpose, rationale and chances of success of any legal recourse against the order are currently being carefully considered.
