The 37-year-old arrives as a free agent after playing 32 matches for Girona last season. He also featured at this summer's World Cup, playing half an hour in Belgium's 1-2 quarter-final defeat to Spain.

The former Standard Liège, Benfica, Zenit and Dortmund player is understood to have agreed a one-year contract with an option for a further season, based on the terms negotiated.

His arrival is seen as a significant boost and a relief for Nice, who have been managing for 15 days following Laurent Abergel's serious injury.

Witsel is set to be presented shortly. The Elye Wahi pursuit, with the forward giving priority to Nice, is currently on hold, neither closed nor materially advanced in recent hours.
