Ayden Heaven: Man United starlet deserves major chance

Manchester United found themselves in an incredibly tricky situation on Friday evening when reports broke that Leny Yoro would miss the trip to Stamford Bridge. With Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez both suspended after red cards, and Matthijs de Ligt’s injury woes, United were down to the bare bones.

They lined up on Saturday night with 19-year-old Ayden Heaven as the only recognised centre-back and Noussair Mazraoui playing in a back two for the first time for the club. They rode their luck at times but, against all odds, they kept a clean sheet and United grabbed a vital 1-0 victory in the race for the Champions League.

Heaven put in an outstanding effort, and his Belgian keeper, Senne Lammens, also praised the England defender. The youngster has rarely played for United, but his performance on Saturday shows he is more than ready.

Always taken chance

Heaven has had limited chances to impress in the 14 months or so he has been at the club.

This is understandable, as he had not started a senior game for Arsenal when he joined last year. Nonetheless, every time he has been thrown into the fire, he has come out smelling of roses.

Heaven played brilliantly in March 2025 against his former side Arsenal and was highly impressive in the FA Cup. The 19-year-old has played little this season, but has also turned up when needed.

He played a lot over the Christmas period and impressed when a short-handed United kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United. His match against Chelsea was the first time he has played double digits in a game since the start of January, but he was still able to put in a masterclass of a performance.

Raw talent

Heaven is not the finished article, but he has an impressive array of skills for one so young.

The youngster is naturally left-footed, so provides a balance to the team. He is also outstanding on the ball and is pretty much press-resistant, which is vital to build out from the back.

His passing is also well above average for a player his age, and he can often make adventurous passes into the midfield in a way only Lisandro Martinez can replicate in the United defence. Scouts have claimed that his “strong technical foundations enable him to consistently identify and find the free player in the early phases.”

Heaven has always been described as possessing “a physical profile well-suited to the modern centre-back.”

His ability to accelerate with pace and power also makes him well equipped to play in a higher line and gives the club some tactical flexibility.

Prime moment

The victory over Chelsea means that United have almost secured a place in the top five, which means Champions League football.

Harry Maguire will return from suspension against Brentford next week, but there is now a prime chance for Heaven to finish the run-in.

The club has five matches remaining, three at home, and Heaven deserves a stint in the first team after his recent performance, even if Yoro is fit.

The Frenchman is still an impressive talent with a very high ceiling, but the truth of the matter is Heaven is showing he deserves to start at this moment in time.
