AZ Alkmaar have been boosted by Kees Smit being passed fit to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

According to Sunderland Echo, the highly rated midfielder travelled and took part in an open training session after missing the last two Eredivisie matches.

Head coach Lee-Roy Echteld would not confirm how much Smit might feature, though he said the youngster is fit to be in the squad. He added AZ believe they can show their strength on Wearside, having won five and drawn one of their first six league fixtures.

Echteld said he expects a hard, mature opponent and an atmosphere that will favour the hosts. He thinks Sunderland will try to push AZ back and that if his side can ride out the early spell, perhaps the first 20 minutes, they can then show their football.

Jordy Clasie, one of AZ’s senior midfielders, previously played at the ground in a 1-0 Southampton win in 2015. He said he is excited to return and praised the passion of the home support, describing Sunderland fans as loyal followers who live for their club.
