Azzedine Ounahi put Morocco in front against Canada in Houston on Saturday, converting a cleverly worked Achraf Hakimi free-kick in their World Cup last-16 tie.
The Atlas Lions had been second best before the break, offering little and managing only one shot. They struck with their first clear opening to seize the initiative.
The breakthrough followed a free-kick on the right side of the area, conceded by Canadian defender Luc de Fougerolles. Rather than swing the ball towards goal, PSG right-back Hakimi cut it back to the edge of the box.
Waiting there, Ounahi guided a side-footed finish beyond the goalkeeper for his first goal of the tournament, giving Morocco a somewhat fortunate lead.
The Girona midfielder, formerly of OM, had time to pick his spot as Canada were caught out by the routine.
