Manuel Neuer remains the big topic around the DFB goal. Despite his strong form at FC Bayern, there are more and more arguments against a return to the national team.

Markus Babbel is convinced that the Bayern captain will no longer play for Germany at the 2026 World Cup. According to Sport Bild, Rudi Völler has already tried to make contact, but Babbel believes a comeback is out of the question.

The former international praises Neuer’s sporting class: „In terms of performance, we don’t even need to discuss it. He is still the best German goalkeeper, if not the best in Europe.“

Nevertheless, he does not expect him to return: „He has certainly thought about it carefully. He also sees that the team is not in a position to become world champions. And then, I think, he would rather use the time in the summer to regenerate and then hang on for another year or two.“

In fact, the situation in the DFB goal is still open. Marc-André ter Stegen is suffering from an injury, his comeback is uncertain and he has lost his regular place in Barcelona anyway. According to Bild, FC Barcelona are thinking about parting ways, but Ter Stegen wants to stay. In the meantime, Oliver Baumann is standing between the posts – but the discussion about Neuer is not dying down.

Goretzka doesn’t believe in Neuer’s comeback either

The situation is also being assessed differently within the DFB. While Julian Nagelsmann emphasizes that „things can always happen in soccer“, other voices see a need for action.

Leon Goretzka, a close friend of Neuer’s, believes a comeback is unlikely: „Manu has ended his career as a national goalkeeper, so I don’t think he’ll be back.“ Neuer himself recently confirmed: „The fact is that I’ve decided not to play for the national team anymore.“ When asked whether this decision was final, he replied succinctly: „Yes!“

While legend Sepp Maier agrees with this assessment, Andreas Köpke still sees opportunities: „If the best is to play, then clearly yes. We should wait and see what happens with Marc-André ter Stegen.“ The discussion about Neuer and the DFB goal will probably continue until the start of the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
