Ronaldo kept Tricolor Baiano in front with four first half saves, thwarting Andrés Gómez and punching clear under pressure. The back line then stood tall, racking up 49 clearances as the visitors protected their box.

After the restart, Vasco pinned their opponents back and slung in a stream of crosses, with substitute Paulo Henrique creating chances. Cláudio Spinelli headed wide twice as the hosts chased a leveller.

Kanu went off injured before the hour and Gabriel Xavier replaced him, but the Bahia defence maintained its shape to see the game out.

Vasco finished with 26 attempts and 62% possession as their pressure mounted late on. Bahia produced eight attempts, three on target, and made the most of their set piece moment.

Next, Vasco host Volta Redonda in the Carioca. Tricolor Baiano face Jacuipense in the Baiano.
