Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping for a much-improved campaign in the Championship this season.

The Owls only narrowly avoided relegation last season after a remarkable turnaround under Danny Rohl, but optimism is high that they can climb the table in the year ahead.

Wednesday received a huge boost when Rohl signed a new long-term contract in May, and the German has wasted no time in getting to work on rebuilding his squad, with 10 new signings arriving at Hillsborough so far this summer.

There have also been a number of departures, including the likes of Cameron Dawson, Ciaran Brennan, Reece James, Will Vaulks, George Byers, Tyreeq Bakinson, Juan Delgado and Lee Gregory, while Mallik Wilks has joined Rotherham United on loan.

With just days remaining in the transfer window, there are likely to be further incomings and outgoings for the Owls, and we looked at three players who could leave the club before the deadline.

Pierce Charles

Goalkeeper Pierce Charles has become increasingly involved in the first team at Hillsborough in recent years, and he is one of Wednesday's brightest young prospects.

Charles started in the Owls' 2-1 win at Hull City in the EFL Cup earlier this month, and he put in an excellent performance, showing impressive composure with the ball at his feet.

The 19-year-old, who signed a new deal at the club in May, is a player with huge potential, underlined by the fact he was called up to the Northern Ireland senior squad for the first time earlier this year, and he looks destined to become Wednesday's number one at some point in the future.

However, with competition for places from James Beadle and Ben Hamer, it seems unlikely that Charles will receive many minutes this season, and Rohl confirmed he could be sent out on loan before the end of the window.

"It depends a little bit on where we are in the next two weeks," Rohl told The Star.

"There will be a point where we have to look forward for the right fit for Pierce, it is special how he plays football. It is about playing football for him, this is what we are looking for, to find a good match. If there is not a good match then of course we are happy to have him here. This is a decision we will make in the next two weeks of course."

League One side Crawley Town enquired about signing Charles on loan earlier in the summer, but the Red Devils have now signed two goalkeepers in Jojo Wollacott and Eddie Beach, so a move to the Broadfield Stadium can be ruled out, and it remains to be seen whether any suitable options will emerge over the coming days.

Bailey Cadamarteri

Striker Bailey Cadamarteri enjoyed a strong breakthrough season at Hillsborough last season as he scored five goals and provided one assist in 25 appearances in all competitions.

Cadamarteri's impressive form at club level earned him a first call-up to the England under-19's squad in March, but his game time became a little more limited in the second half of the season after the arrival of Ike Ugbo on loan from Troyes.

With Ugbo re-joining the club on a permanent basis this summer, The Star claim that Wednesday are "actively looking" to send Cadamarteri out on loan before the end of the window.

As with Charles, Rohl will be keen to find the perfect destination for Cadamarteri before sanctioning his temporary exit, but there is no doubt a loan move would be hugely beneficial for his development.

Michael Smith

Cadamarteri may not be the only striker to leave Hillsborough before next week's deadline, with Michael Smith also facing an uncertain future.

Smith joined Wednesday from Rotherham United in June 2022, and he has been an important part of the squad over the last two years, but he struggled for minutes in the Championship last season.

Derby County were reportedly keen to sign Smith on loan in January, but he remained in South Yorkshire, and he is the subject of transfer interest once again this summer.

The Star claim that Smith is on the radar of "a handful of EFL clubs", including Wrexham, but while the Red Dragons have "had contact with Wednesday over a possible deal", the two clubs are "some way off an agreement".

Smith came off the bench to score for the Owls in the 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle on the opening weekend, and eyebrows were raised when he was introduced at half time in the 4-0 defeat at Sunderland on Sunday ahead of the likes of Ugbo and Charlie McNeill.

That could suggest that Smith remains part of Rohl's plans, but it does seem unlikely he will be a regular starter this season, and it would be no surprise to see the 32-year-old move on over the coming days.
